This may also WORSEN the performance – people from one datacenter might just decide to move to another because it would be most populated one, creating extra load on one data center (and turning another one into ghost city with several hour wait time for places like Praetorium or Castrum Meridianum).Square Enix announced the latest round of measures to tackle congestion caused by so many people playing Final Fantasy XIV instantly. This is especially bad for EU people since they ALL used to have the ability to queue up together and now the HALF of them will be forced to split and will never be able to meet in game, not in dungeons or PvP areas or in any other way.

This is a BAD thing for everyone who is in similar situation with established cross-world LCs and static groups which will be forcefully split after upcoming data center changes or who, for example, watches some FFXIV streamers from various servers and occasionally likes to group up with them without leaving their own server but now won’t be able to do so. I already gave a specific example – if I want to stay on Faerie, I have to abandon some people on Mateus and Coeurl COMPLETELY (because those servers will be moved to different data center) – they will NOT be moving to my data center because they have lots of FC friends on their own center (especially the AeNet people on Coeurl, which is the largest FC there) and I also will not be moving from Faerie because I know a lot of wonderful people on it. I am trying to think from a point of view of general players, who might enjoy doing other things, or have established social relation through Party Finder.

Maybe it is – you’re trying to think purely from RP player’s point of view, and RP players got VERY lucky because Balmung and Mateus will not be split. I also suspect it’s related to stability concerns with the new world visit system, which also would not be solved by capping the population of any one or two larger servers. Balmung just happened to have the largest concentration, but if you spread them all out evenly to the others we would have still seen the same overall numbers trying to get in that solo instance at the same time. We had issues on Faerie with getting into the solo instance at the start of Stormblood (which then impacted other ones as they intentionally lowered the cap on instance servers for a time) because so many across Aether were trying to enter at the same. Doesn’t matter if the population is concentrated on Balmung or spread evenly among the rest of the servers – they’d still be accessing the same instance servers when trying to queue up the solo instances and dungeons and such.

Not saying that this would solve all performance issues but it would definitely help, especially removing the bots (which could be achieved by, for example, hiring a few more people to process reports faster, or adding a detection to the client to detect the most popular paid bot programs – there’s one that existed for 4 years and still being updated with every new game patch and SE never bothered to try to detect it).Īdding restrictions on more populated servers wouldn’t really help the main issue they are looking to address, which is data center performance as a whole.

For example by adding more restrictions for new characters on more populated servers (right now the Balmung is still the only server that is closed for new characters on NA servers and on my primary server I have never seen a login queue even during recently announced free one month trial) or, by, for example, implementing better actions against bots which is still a HUGE issue in this game, even worse than in WoW (every day I log in I see bots with gibberish names constantly teleporting at Gridania’s Aetheryte plaza without using legitimate teleport action, or farming mobs from behind the walls in certain areas, or tank bots in low-level duties who spam Flash every few seconds and who sometimes get stuck running or keep trying to pull stuff even if your group have stopped for a break). I’m not sure about “inevitable” but there are some other things they could be doing to balance population and performance better.
